Can myopia in children be reversed or only slowed down?

If your child has been diagnosed with myopia, you’re likely wondering whether myopia in children can be reversed or only slowed down. The honest answer is that true reversal of myopia is extremely rare, but the good news is that progression can be significantly slowed or even halted with the right interventions. Understanding your options and what to expect from different treatments can help you make informed decisions about your child’s eye health.

Understanding myopia progression in children

Myopia typically develops when the eyeball grows too long from front to back, causing light to focus in front of the retina rather than directly on it. Once this structural change occurs, it’s generally permanent. The condition usually begins in childhood and can progress rapidly during the school years, particularly between ages 6 and 14.

Children’s eyes grow quickly, and myopia often worsens by 0.5 to 1.0 dioptres per year without intervention. This progression tends to slow down naturally as children reach their late teens, but by then, the myopia may have become quite severe if left unmanaged.

Why true myopia reversal is unlikely

The physical changes that cause myopia involve the actual structure of the eye becoming elongated. Think of it like growing taller – once your child reaches a certain height, they don’t naturally shrink back down. Similarly, once the eye has grown longer, it typically remains that way.

There are rare cases where very mild myopia in young children may appear to reverse, but this is usually due to measurement variations or temporary factors rather than actual structural reversal. For the vast majority of children with myopia, the goal should be preventing further progression rather than expecting reversal.

Proven methods to slow myopia progression

Orthokeratology contact lenses

Orthokeratology, or ortho-k, involves wearing specially designed rigid contact lenses overnight that gently reshape the cornea. During the day, children can see clearly without glasses or contacts. Studies show ortho-k can reduce myopia progression by 40 to 60 per cent compared to standard glasses.

Atropine eye drops

Low-dose atropine drops (typically 0.01% to 0.05%) used nightly have shown remarkable results in clinical trials. They can slow myopia progression by 50 to 80 per cent with minimal side effects. Your optometrist will need to monitor your child regularly and adjust the concentration as needed.

Multifocal contact lenses and glasses

Special multifocal designs can reduce peripheral hyperopic defocus, which is thought to contribute to eye growth. These lenses typically slow progression by 25 to 50 per cent and are suitable for children who are comfortable wearing contacts during the day.

Outdoor time and lifestyle modifications

Increasing outdoor time to at least two hours daily can help slow myopia progression. The bright natural light and distance viewing outdoors appear to have protective effects. Reducing prolonged near work and ensuring good lighting can also help.

What to expect from myopia management

Most myopia control treatments don’t work immediately. You’ll typically see their effectiveness measured over 6 to 12 months through regular eye examinations. Your eye care professional will monitor changes in your child’s prescription, eye length measurements and overall eye health.

Success is measured by how much the treatment slows progression compared to what would have happened without intervention. For example, if your child’s myopia would have progressed by 1.0 dioptre in a year but only progresses by 0.3 dioptres with treatment, that’s considered highly successful.

The importance of early intervention

Starting myopia management early in your child’s journey is crucial. The earlier you begin treatment, the more total progression you can prevent. Even slowing progression by half can mean the difference between mild myopia and high myopia in adulthood, significantly reducing the risk of serious complications like retinal detachment or glaucoma.

While myopia reversal isn’t realistic for most children, effective management can dramatically slow progression and preserve long-term eye health. Work closely with your eye care professional to choose the most appropriate treatment for your child’s age, lifestyle and specific needs.
