How Bright Light Protects the Growing Eye
The leading scientific explanation for the protective effect of outdoor light involves a neurotransmitter called dopamine. In a normally developing eye, the eyeball grows to precisely the right length so that light focuses exactly on the retina. Myopia occurs when the eye grows too long, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead. Retinal dopamine appears to act as a stop signal, helping prevent this excessive elongation.
When children spend most of their time indoors, they receive far less of this dopamine-triggering bright light stimulation. Without adequate dopamine signalling, the eye is more likely to overshoot its correct length, leading to myopia.
It Is Not About UV Light
A common misconception is that ultraviolet light from the sun is the protective factor. Current research does not support this. The protective mechanism appears to be driven by the overall intensity of visible light, not UV radiation specifically. This is important because it means children benefit from outdoor time even when wearing UV-blocking sunglasses and sunscreen, as they should for skin protection.
The Spectral Quality of Outdoor Light
Beyond brightness, outdoor light also has a different spectral composition compared to artificial lighting. Sunlight contains a broad, continuous spectrum of wavelengths. Indoor lighting, whether LED, fluorescent or incandescent, tends to have a narrower and less even spectral distribution.
Some research suggests this broader spectrum may play a role in healthy eye development, although brightness remains the primary factor. The key message is that no indoor lighting system, regardless of brightness claims or spectrum, can replicate the full qualities of natural outdoor light.
Why Sitting Near a Window Is Not Enough
Parents sometimes ask whether having their child sit near a window or in a sunlit room achieves the same benefit. Unfortunately, it does not. Standard window glass blocks a significant portion of light, and the light that passes through is typically much dimmer than being outside. Studies measuring light exposure with wearable sensors consistently show that light levels near a window are far below outdoor levels.
Indoor environments next to large windows might reach 1,000 to 3,000 lux in direct sunlight, which is better than a room interior but still well below the outdoor threshold associated with myopia protection.

One of the most practical implications of this research is that outdoor time on overcast days is still beneficial. Even under heavy cloud cover, outdoor light levels typically range from 2,000 to 10,000 lux, dramatically brighter than any indoor environment. Parents do not need to wait for sunny days to get their children outside.
